How to Adorn Your Home With Christmas Decorations

The Christmas and holiday season is a great time to use your imagination and craft talents in giving your home a festive decor. No talents? That's not really a problem, as there are so many Christmas decorations to choose from, you can still use your imagination in the way you decorate your home with the shop bought decorations you choose, and come up with a unique display to please the eyes of you, your family and friends.   When it comes to decorations, the Christmas holiday will give you more flexibility with your decorations than Easter, Valentine's Day, and Halloween combined.

It's a good idea to use a theme for your Christmas decorations. Not only does this give a focus for your design, but can help keep your house from getting too cluttered with decorations. If you pick a certain Christmas related theme for the house, or even each room of the home if you are feeling inventive and have the time, and decorate your home, or room, around that one central theme. This approach can sometimes help to keep the costs of Christmas decorations down, but will normally add a touch of distinction. Let's be honest, most of us talent less designers just throw up all the decorations we can afford in any old manner.

A popular theme for decorating your home for Christmas is evergreen.  Pine trees, pine boughs, and garlands made from pine boughs are all extremely popular forms of decorating for the Christmas season, due in part to the tradition of the Christmas tree, and maybe even the olde worlde Yuletide log.  Garlands are fairly inexpensive; they can be purchased from your local florist, a grocery store, or even made by yourself at home! Many people may also use miniature versions of the classic Christmas tree to decorate their homes, and Christmas trees are an excellent, if not essential, addition to your evergreen Christmas theme.  You can buy small, artificial Christmas trees at just about any store , and they are easily decorated.  In a child's room, you can decorate the tree in toy cars, crayons, Christmas lights, and other things that relate to children.  This is also a great way to enhance the theme of the child's room.

Snowflakes are also a popular theme for Christmas decorations, whether you live in a cold climate or not.  Even for people who do not celebrate Christmas, the snowflake theme is an excellent way to decorate for the holiday season.  If there are children in the home, why not get them involved in the creation of some decorations? They can help you by cutting out tin foil stars or icicles, for example, while you wrap Christmas gifts or perform any other Christmas task that is necessary. This will not only help with the decorating itself, but help the child or children to feel part of the Christmas excitement and preparation. Of course, white and silver would be the main colours of your snow theme.  Artificial, spray-on snow (also called spackle) should be used with care in this situation.  Spackle can be a very tricky substance to use, and it must be used sparingly.

Santa Claus and snowmen are very common and often seen themes during the Christmas season.  These items are common in the stores, so present no problem in obtaining, or they are easily made at home.  To enhance a Snowman theme, you could use Styrofoam balls to create your own DIY snowman, or, if you prefer, you can use construction paper for a simpler effect.

The problem with a Santa Claus theme is overdoing the number, size and forms of Santas. If you keep it subdued, and then build the rest of the decorations with ancilliary things like a mini grotto, sleigh and reindeer and anything else that reminds of, and compliments, Santa Claus.

If you want a theme for each room, and want to plan something ambitious, you will need to start early to think of enough themes. One idea may be to reflect Christmas around the world, a different country for each room. Such a theme is better if you make it a holiday season decor rather than just Christmas. Even in non Christian countries, that time of year is usually a time for celebration.
