Nativity scenes at Christmas have been a tradition that goes back way before the use of electric Christmas lights. Two recent developments, though, have brought about a change in Christmas nativity scenes.

With those two strong commercial trends, it is hardly surprising that outdoor nativity scenes and sets have become available in prelit form, with figures and objects being highlighted at night by an array of Christmas lights.

Such lit nativity scenes can have quite a magical appeal, in the way the lights provide an outline for the main characters and locations of the Christmas nativity and the birth of Jesus.

The three pictures here are all based on various elements of the story of Jesus's birth in Bethlehem about 2000 years ago. Each uses lights to create the shapes of the settings and characters.
