For those who prefer to piece together a Christmas nativity set with individual items, you should be able to find most, if not all, the familiar Christmas characters and symbols individually. While it is easy to buy a complete set, it can be fun, and more flexible, to create a nativity set of your own, one element at a time. That can be so on a small scale indoors or outdoors, or on a very large, even giant, scale outdoors, whether in a yard, garden or in the car park of a store or other commercial property.
It is particularly important for an outdoor nativity display to pay careful attention to the layout, and safety, when you are setting it up. One thing to bear in mind is the weather, especially if you are in a windy area. The giant nativity sets in particular can cost an awful lot of money to set up, so it may be wise to weigh down the display items with sand bags. Your Christms display will be that much safer through that simple precaution.
When deciding where to place each part of the set, be sure to place the stable, if there is one, in the central position, with Mary, Joseph and the manger clearly visible as the centerpiece. It is a good idea to put the three wise men on one side, with animals and shepherds on the other.
It is worth paying a lot of attention to the layout to get best effect. On the safety side, your extension cord must be designed for outdoor use. The extra time and care you put into setting up your display, the more likely it is that everyone will be imperssed and get pleasure from your Christmas nativity set. Finally, ensure you buy individual items for the display that are in propertion to each other, within reason.
Some poetic license is, of course, allowed, and the Star of Bethlehem (above left), for example, cannot be placed up in the sky. As an important nativity symbol, though, it can be erected at a higher level than the other pieces of the set you erect. But other pieces, such as the animals like the camel (top left) and sheep, are best kept in proportion to the people, such as Joseph, Mary and the Shepherds.
