For Christians, the Christmas celebration is about the birth of Jesus Christ. In the wider world, nativity has a meaning that covers birth and the early years of life, but for Christians, they normally associate the nativity with Christmas. For that reason, displaying nativity scenes has been a long tradition in the days or weeks running up to December 25.

Nativity scenes can take several forms, but are usually instantly recognisable, whichever form they may take. Live nativity scenes or mini plays can be performed in the festive season by live players, including school children. Some localities may have a large outside nativity display, with some homeowners doing the same in their front garden or yard. Small indoor nativity ornaments, such as those by Fontanini shown here, are also much loved as part of the Christmas decor.

Fontanini has created several versions of the familiar stable, where Jesus is said to have been born. Our first picture is of one of those stables, a hand painted Christmas ornament in delicate detail. Apart from stable nativity scenes, Fontanini also produces nativity inn and King's tent scenes, with examples shown in the middle and bottom pictures respectively.
